‘Social Listening’: The Consumer Goods Giant Seeks to Capitalise On Vaseline’s Social Media Breakthrough.
First identified more than 150 years ago within a Pennsylvania drilling site, the humble pot of Vaseline might not appear as an clear candidate for social media algorithms.
Nonetheless, its ascent as a TikTok talking point has thrust it into the lead of an advertising revolution, where major corporations are spending big on content creators and reducing expenditure on advertising goods in traditional media.
The Path from Petroleum to Platforms
The petroleum jelly was first manufactured in the 1870s by a chemist, Robert Cheeseborough, who saw laborers using on their skin with a residue from oil extraction. Now, a flood of user-generated videos have chronicled its broad application in “everyday tips”.
It has been touted as a remedy for cleaning shoes or making fragrance last longer, as well as a fix for squeaky doors. It has even been deployed to prevent the annoyance of crisp flavouring sticking to fingers.
Harnessing the Hype
Spotting its digital renaissance, strategists within the corporation enhanced the tricks by having their research teams evaluate the claims and providing creators with the outcome data.
Assertions that it diminished the burn from hot food on the lips were given the thumbs up. Similarly supported were ideas it could lengthen scent duration and revive leather bags. Proposals that it might bleach teeth or make eyelashes longer were refuted.
A Plan Built on ‘Social Listening’
Outdoor advertising and television commercials would once have been the cornerstone of its marketing push. However, this online trend has led decision-makers to dramatically increase investment in content creators.
This monitoring of online platforms to shape commercial tactics has been dubbed “social listening”. Fernando Fernández, freshly instated, has indicated the goal is to spend half of its colossal advertising budget on platform-based material.
Adapting to New Consumer Habits
The company's social media lead, who is spearheading the social media effort, said the company was just evolving with contemporary approaches of connecting with customers. She said participating on platforms “without dampening the fun” was paramount.
“How do brands authentically become part of the conversation? That’s always what we’ve been trying to do as brands, since the era of community gossip and discussing household products.
“The trend is shifting from a broadcast model, where we would just transmit messages … Today, it's numerous dialogues, diverse communities. Changes in digital feeds means that these groups seem specialized, yet they are vast.
“Ensuring your product is discussed by users, mentioned by individuals, that is how you can build trust and relevance. Content makers are key. We are expanding this endorsement system.”
A Fundamental Consumption Turn
The strategy reflects profound shifts occurring in how media is consumed, with younger consumers spending more time on apps like TikTok and Instagram than television, magazines or radio.
This change is evidenced by drops in traditional media advertising. In the UK, ad revenues for primary networks have dropped substantially in actual value since the end of the last decade.
Influencer Marketing Expansion
It also reflects a media convergence as brands effectively act as media producers, collaborating with numerous influencers to promote their goods.
A commercial director at a major talent agency said: “Naturally, an exodus of attention away from some legacy media and they’re spending a lot more time on digital video and image apps than they are viewing scheduled television or reading physical magazines.
“Numerous corporations inform us people trust recommendations from the individuals they follow over traditional advertisements. That’s a consistent trend.”
He said brands could also save money by targeting content creators over large-scale legacy ad buys, which also allows them to tweak their content more easily to test effectiveness.
The approach is growing. Advertising spending on digital creator partnerships is growing fourfold quicker than the broader media sector. Stateside, it has over doubled since 2021 and is forecast to attain tens of billions in 2025.
TV's Lasting Role
Even with this transformation, industry figures said they believed TV advertising still had a prominent role to play, as broadcasters retained the power to frame public debate.
She added: “A top-tier ROI marketing event is still events like the Super Bowl. It's not a matter of networks declaring: ‘Our relevance has faded.’ It’s about who’s capturing attention … I think there’s 100% a place for them.”
