The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable if you're playing as a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
